The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have declared a fresh strike notice directed at the Federal Government following the recent attacks, abduction, and assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and other members of the unions.
The leaders of the NLC and TUC presented the government with a six-point demand during a press briefing on Friday.
Among their demands is the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, the Area Commander, and other officials allegedly involved in the mistreatment and degradation of Comrade Ajaero and fellow workers. Should the government fail to meet these demands, the unions have set November 8 as the date for a nationwide strike.
Ajaero Attack: PENGASSAN Cites Threat to Trade Union Movement
Earlier, suspected state agents and security operatives had violently assaulted Ajaero and other labour leaders, causing injuries and robbing them of personal belongings during a planned protest at the NLC State secretariat.
The protest was aimed at addressing issues such as unpaid salaries and allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The reprehensible attack has triggered widespread condemnation, leading to plans for a meeting between the NLC and TUC leaders on Tuesday next week to decide the appropriate course of action in response to the disturbing incident.
