The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced their intent to commence a nationwide strike, effective midnight today. This protest follows the disturbing incident in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, where NLC President Joe Ajaero and other leaders were assaulted.

The decision to initiate the strike was solidified on November 7, with the unions setting a deadline for action by Tuesday, November 14, should their demands go unmet. The assault on Ajaero and his colleagues occurred when they gathered at the NLC State Secretariat in Owerri to address a range of issues, including unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

On the fateful day, suspected state agents and security operatives violently attacked the labor leaders, vandalizing their vehicles, causing injuries, and robbing them of personal belongings, including phones, money, and ATM cards. The incident took place as the leaders prepared for a scheduled protest over lingering labor concerns.

The brutality inflicted upon Ajaero and other national leaders has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation both within the country and internationally. The unions remain resolute in their commitment to addressing the pressing issues facing workers in Imo State and ensuring justice for the victims of the violent assault.
