The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani has revealed strategies to lead a worldwide initiative aimed at bolstering the security of undersea cables, crucial arteries of global digital connectivity.

The minister however revealed this development via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, against the backdrop of recent undersea cable cuts impacting countries such as Ghana, Togo, and Senegal.

Recognizing the indispensable role played by these cables in the digital economy, Tijani underscored the urgency to reassess international regulations and forge partnerships with regional and global entities to expedite efforts to safeguard this vital infrastructure.

Assuring those affected by the disruptions, he assured them that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders to promptly address the issues at hand.

Emphasizing the significance of this initiative, Tijani remarked, “This marks a significant step towards ensuring the resilience and reliability of undersea cables, which serve as crucial lifelines in today’s interconnected world.”

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of telecommunications companies and industry stakeholders in mitigating the impact of the cable cuts, Tijani commended their dedication to preparing for future challenges.

He further pledged to engage with regional and global bodies to accelerate efforts to protect undersea cables, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing this critical agenda.

The recent disruptions to undersea cables have prompted concerns across the West African sub-region, with significant implications for banking, telecommunications, and allied sectors. Despite ongoing efforts to restore connectivity, it is anticipated that the resolution of these issues may take several weeks, posing challenges to economic, academic, and social activities.
