Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has appointed popular Nollywood star Mercy Johnson-Okojie as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.

The announcement was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, who said the appointment forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to deepen communication between the government and the people of Edo State.

According to the statement, Johnson-Okojie’s new role is designed to strengthen public participation in government programmes and policies, ensuring that citizens are better informed and more actively involved in governance processes.

The actress, widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most accomplished performers, brings nearly two decades of industry experience to the role. With appearances in over 200 films, she has built a strong reputation not only as an entertainer but also as a producer and entrepreneur.

Beyond the screen, Johnson-Okojie is known for her humanitarian efforts through the Mercy Johnson Okojie Foundation, where she has spearheaded initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, child welfare, access to education, and healthcare outreach.

Government officials expressed confidence that her popularity and grassroots appeal would help bridge the gap between policymakers and residents across the state, particularly among young people and women.

Johnson-Okojie is married to Odianosen Okogie, who currently represents Esan North East/Esan South East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

  • Her appointment signals the administration’s intention to tap into influential public figures to enhance civic engagement and amplify government messaging across diverse communities in Edo State.
