Nigeria’s Senate has announced that it will reconvene for plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, despite an earlier decision to embark on a two-week legislative break.

The unexpected recall has drawn attention to what observers believe are pressing national matters requiring urgent parliamentary deliberation.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by Emmanuel Odo, Clerk of the Senate.

According to him, the decision to reconvene was made on the directive of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, who instructed that all distinguished senators be formally notified of the new sitting date.

Odo stated that the plenary session will commence at 11:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

He urged lawmakers to adjust their personal and official engagements to ensure full attendance, stressing that crucial decisions affecting the nation are expected to be taken during the session.

In his message, the Clerk emphasized the importance of the meeting, noting that senators must treat the recall with urgency and seriousness.

While specific details of the agenda were not disclosed, the tone of the notice suggests that significant legislative or national issues may be up for discussion.

The Senate had earlier proceeded on a two-week break to allow lawmakers focus on the ongoing 2026 budget defence sessions involving various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

During this period, committees have been engaging heads of government agencies to scrutinize their budget proposals and ensure accountability in public spending.

The decision to reconvene before the end of the scheduled break highlights the dynamic nature of legislative responsibilities and the need for lawmakers to respond swiftly to emerging national developments.
