The Lagos State Police Command has reinstated the security details of Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, after a brief withdrawal that sparked controversy.
According to Lagos State Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, the security details were withdrawn for audit purposes, as part of a nationwide audit of police personnel and firearms .
The withdrawal of Meranda’s security aides, including police officers, had raised concerns about her safety, with a source close to the Speaker confirming that she was left vulnerable.
“All the Speaker’s security aides have been withdrawn. All the security aides attached to the House of Assembly have also been withdrawn, the speaker is now vulnerable,” the source lamented. However, with the reinstatement of her security details, the Lagos State Police Command aims to ensure Meranda’s safety and security.
The spokesperson for Meranda, Ganzallo Victor, confirmed the development to news men saying, “We don’t know why the authorities have done that, but all the police officers and other security details attached to her have been withdrawn. She’s on her own at the moment.”
Top Society reported that the development comes amid an ongoing leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly, with impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, insisting that he remains the Speaker, while a majority of lawmakers endorse Meranda’s leadership. The crisis has raised tensions, with Obasa storming the Assembly complex and presiding over a plenary session with only a handful of lawmakers in attendance.
The Lagos State Police Command has reassured the public that the withdrawal and reinstatement of Meranda’s security details were not politically motivated, but rather part of a routine audit process.
