The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike commencing today, September 22, 2023. This move comes as a response to the government’s failure to meet the NLC’s demands, which include the provision of palliatives to offset the adverse effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.
The NLC had previously taken action with a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6, yet the government failed to address their concerns within the stipulated 14-day ultimatum period. This escalation was confirmed by the Head of the Department for Information and Public Affairs of the NLC, Benson Upah, in a statement released to the press on Friday, September 22.
Upah emphasized that the strike is now underway and could commence at any moment. Unlike the two-day warning strike, this action will be rigorously enforced, with stringent compliance measures in place.

“Do you know of any good general who put out his plans in the public before he strikes? We are fully ready to strike,” Upah said.
The NLC also called upon the younger generation to participate in this movement, emphasizing that the nation belongs to them, and they should rise up to reclaim it.
This development follows closely on the heels of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) announcing plans to hold a protest in Lagos State on Monday, further highlighting the growing unrest and discontent among labor unions in Nigeria.
