The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of Nigeria’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, giving eligible citizens additional time to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission also introduced a new online self-service registration platform aimed at making the process faster, easier, and more accessible.
INEC said the extension followed widespread appeals from stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, youth groups, and members of the public who requested more time due to the high number of people still seeking to register.
Originally scheduled to conclude on July 10, the registration exercise will now run until July 24, allowing more eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate in future elections.
As part of its efforts to improve service delivery, the electoral commission also unveiled an online registration system that enables first-time voters to begin the registration process from anywhere using internet-enabled devices. The platform is expected to reduce congestion at physical registration centres and make the exercise more convenient for applicants.
INEC explained that the digital initiative aligns with its ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system. By simplifying the registration process, the commission hopes to encourage greater participation, particularly among young people and citizens who previously found it difficult to access registration centres.
The commission assured Nigerians that the online platform has been designed with security measures to protect applicants’ information and maintain the integrity of the voter register. It also noted that guidance and technical support would be available to help users complete the process successfully.
Observers have described the extension as a welcome development, noting that registration centres in many parts of the country have experienced overwhelming turnout in recent weeks. The additional time is expected to ease pressure on registration officials while giving more citizens the opportunity to exercise their civic responsibility.
Political stakeholders have also welcomed the move, saying it demonstrates INEC’s willingness to respond to public concerns and promote an inclusive electoral process. They expressed optimism that the extension would lead to a more comprehensive and representative voters’ register.
The introduction of online self-service registration marks another step in Nigeria’s gradual adoption of digital solutions within the electoral process. If successfully implemented, analysts believe the innovation could improve efficiency, reduce delays, and enhance the overall voter registration experience.
INEC has encouraged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to make use of the extended period and complete the process before the new deadline. The commission reiterated that participating in voter registration remains an important civic duty and urged citizens to seize the opportunity to prepare for future elections.
With the extension now in place and the rollout of a digital registration platform, INEC aims to expand voter participation while improving the efficiency and accessibility of the country’s electoral system ahead of the next general elections.
