Fidelity Bank Steps In to Transform Learning and Hygiene for Makoko School Children

Fidelity Bank Plc has once again demonstrated that meaningful corporate responsibility goes beyond boardrooms and balance sheets, as the bank delivered a life changing intervention for schoolchildren in the Makoko waterfront community of Lagos.

Through its employee led Fidelity Helping Hands Programme (FHHP), the bank supported pupils of Wesley Nursery and Primary School with essential educational and hygiene materials aimed at improving both their learning experience and overall wellbeing. The initiative focused on children living in one of Lagos’ most underserved riverine communities, where access to basic school supplies and hygiene resources remains a daily struggle.

As part of the outreach, over one hundred pupils received school bags, exercise books, writing materials, towels, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. These items, though simple, are critical in helping children attend school with dignity, concentrate better in class, and adopt healthy personal hygiene habits that reduce illness and absenteeism.

The intervention was driven by Fidelity Bank’s Risk Management Directorate under a “Back to School” campaign, reflecting the bank’s belief that education and health are deeply connected. By combining learning tools with hygiene support, the initiative addressed two major barriers to quality education in vulnerable communities.

Speaking during the outreach, a representative of the bank emphasized that Fidelity Bank’s success is closely linked to the wellbeing of the communities it serves. According to the bank, investing in children especially those facing structural disadvantages is an investment in Nigeria’s future, as educated and healthy children are better positioned to grow into productive citizens.

Community leaders welcomed the initiative with appreciation, noting that many Makoko children face daily challenges ranging from transportation difficulties to financial hardship. The donated materials were described as timely and impactful, easing the burden on parents and encouraging pupils to remain committed to their education.

The Makoko school outreach is part of Fidelity Bank’s broader and consistent engagement with the community, marking another step in its ongoing efforts to support education, hygiene, and sustainable development. By directly addressing real needs on the ground, Fidelity Bank continues to set an example of how corporate organizations can drive social impact and help bridge inequality one child, one school, and one community at a time.
