The Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned the trial of the former Central Bank of Nigeria’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in an alleged procurement fraud case. The court has set the date for the continuation of the proceedings on January 18, 2024.
Emefiele stands accused of leveraging his position to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Yaro, a staff member of the CBN. The allegations revolve around the awarding of a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles, valued at N1.2 billion, spanning the years 2018 to 2020.
Following the accusations, Emefiele found himself remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending a ruling on his bail application, which took place on November 22. Justice Hamza Muazu, presiding over the case, granted bail to the former CBN governor in the sum of N300 million.
However, this relief came with conditions. Justice Muazu mandated that Emefiele must produce two sureties in the same sum. Notably, these sureties are required to possess certificates of occupancy and titles of properties located within the Maitama district in Abuja.
