Crackdown on Fuel Smugglers: Customs Puts 14,000 Litres Up for Sale

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said it will auction more than 14,000 litres of petrol seized from smugglers in Cross River State.

Customs officials explained that the petrol was confiscated during several anti-smuggling operations along major border routes known for illegal fuel trade. The operations were part of efforts to protect Nigeria’s economy and stop the illegal movement of subsidised fuel to neighbouring countries.

According to the NCS, the petrol will be sold to members of the public through an auction, following standard procedures. The agency said this will ensure the fuel is properly used and sold at approved prices, while also discouraging smuggling.

The Customs Service assured Nigerians that it will continue to clamp down on economic sabotage, especially in border communities. It also warned smugglers to stop their illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.

The auction is expected to be conducted in line with due process, with interested buyers required to meet specified conditions before participating. Customs officials said transparency would be maintained throughout the exercise to ensure fairness and accountability.

Authorities also noted that proceeds from the sale would be remitted to the appropriate government accounts in line with existing financial regulations. The move, they explained, reflects the agency’s commitment to preventing waste while strengthening revenue generation.

Residents of border communities have been urged to support security agencies by providing useful information that could help track down smuggling networks. The NCS stressed that community cooperation remains vital in tackling the menace.
