LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos High Court has sentenced Officer Drambi Vandi, a suspended assistant superintendent of police, to death by hanging. Vandi stood accused of the murder of Bolanle Raheem, a prominent female lawyer, in a tragic incident that occurred on Christmas Day.
Officer Drambi Vandi, who had initially pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, faced a one-count charge of murder before the Lagos State High Court at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) annex on Monday.
The horrific incident unfolded on December 25 when Bolanle Raheem was allegedly shot dead by Officer Vandi in the Ajah area of Lagos. The victim was returning home from a Christmas outing with her family when the horrifying shooting transpired, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
This Christmas Day killing drew widespread condemnation from various segments of society, including the political elite, who called for justice and accountability.
