Aviation Minister Summons Emergency Meeting as Aviation Safety Concerns Grows

In response to recent safety concerns in the Nigerian aviation industry, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has called for an emergency meeting with heads of regulatory agencies.

The announcement, made in a statement on Monday, reveals plans for a comprehensive review of recent incidents that have raised worries about passenger safety.

“Due to safety concerns in the aviation sector expressed by members of the public, I have summoned the heads of the regulatory agencies to my office later today to review the incidents that are the cause of these concerns and to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to forestall future occurrence and to apply sanctions, where necessary, regarding the past incidents,” the minister said.

The Nigerian Aviation sector has been grappling with incidents, the most recent being the temporary halt of domestic flights en route to Abuja earlier this month. A malfunctioning aircraft from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, blocked the runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, causing hours of disruption.

The stranded plane led to cancellations and rescheduling of flights destined for Abuja from various airports across the country.

Flights from Sokoto, Kano, Akure, and Ibadan were among those canceled, while several flights from the southeast region were rescheduled for a later time.
