Telecom Subscribers Lament Over Ridiculous Data Consumption

TOPSOCIETYNG
Subscribers and Nigerians at large have expressed their continuous dissatisfaction with the Telecommunication companies/service providers, particularly on the issue of data consumption, pointing to concerns over affordability, transparency, and the overall impact on their daily lives.
You may have noticed that data values were not only cut short, also it get exhausted much faster than usual. And this cuts across MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile. The issue of data consumption has become a hot topic across social media platforms, with numerous users sharing their experiences of exhausting data plans faster than before. Many consumers are expressing frustration at the seeming lack of clarity regarding how data is being utilized and why it appears to be depleting at a faster rate.
Affordability is a major concern for a significant portion of the Nigerian population. As data prices remain a crucial factor for users, the current trend has led to a spike in complaints. Users are increasingly questioning why the subscription prices are increased and yet they can’t get adequate value for their money.
Investigation carried out by Topsocietylive revealed that this is linked to the recent increment on VAT  payment levied on these telecom companies. Speaking to our correspondent, Secretary General of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, ALTON, Gbolahan Awonuga, said VAT increase affects both consumers and they the operators but moving forward, consumers are the ones to pay for the increased VAT as it will be added to their daily airtime and data subscription taxes.
According to Awonuga, telecoms is the highest vat paying agency. He added that telecoms is only a collecting agent for the government, I.e; they are merely players for the government to collect more tax from citizens.
He said;
“Indirectly, it is the consumers that are still paying for the increased VAT.
It is a consumption tax that the subscribers must have to pay.”
Telecom companies have often introduced various data plans to cater to different user needs. However, some consumers argue that the variety of plans and their associated terms and conditions can be confusing. This has led to instances where users inadvertently consume more data than intended or struggle to understand the intricacies of their chosen plans.
Transparency issues further exacerbate the dissatisfaction. Users are calling for clearer communication from telecom companies regarding data usage patterns, any changes in policies, and a breakdown of how data is consumed across different activities. The lack of transparency has fueled suspicions that telecom companies may be implementing subtle changes that result in increased data usage without proper disclosure.
As the country continues to witness a digital transformation with more people relying on the internet for work, education, and entertainment, the impact of high data consumption is felt across various sectors. From remote work challenges to limitations on educational access, the consequences are broad and affect the daily lives of millions of Nigerians.
Nigerians and subscribers are therefore calling for increased regulation to ensure that telecom companies operate fairly and transparently, particularly addressing the concerns of the populace.
Telecom companies can revisit data plans to make them more user-friendly, they can also by enhance communication about data usage patterns. Ensuring that users have a clear understanding of how their data is consumed and offering affordable plans that cater to diverse needs can contribute to rebuilding consumer trust in the telecom sector.
As the dialogue on data consumption in Nigeria continues to gain momentum, both telecom companies and regulators are expected to respond to the demands of the increasingly unsatisfied user base. This could shape the future landscape of data services in the country and set a precedent for consumer-centric practices in the telecom industry.
