Explosion Rocks Rivers House of Assembly Complex

On Sunday night, the Rivers State House of Assembly complex was struck by a powerful explosion, leading to widespread destruction within the premises. The incident unfolded amidst escalating political tensions, with reports emerging of a potential move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Allegedly, unidentified perpetrators hurled an explosive device into the building around 9:25 pm, triggering a fierce blaze that engulfed the chamber.

Although the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, has yet to confirm the incident, eyewitness accounts revealed significant harm to various properties housed within the legislative chamber. The event appears to have a strong political undertone, with suggestions pointing toward a carefully orchestrated scheme to disrupt the governing body’s operations.

Notably, claims have surfaced indicating an intricate plot by certain lawmakers to first remove the House leader, Eddison Ehie, in a bid to facilitate Governor Fubara’s potential ousting. It is alleged that the House leader had been actively obstructing the initiatives aimed at the governor’s removal, adding fuel to the already blazing political fire within the state.

Amidst the chaos, security forces swiftly cordoned off the area, assuming control over the complex. A substantial deployment of about 17 security trucks and one Armoured Personnel Carrier fortified the entrance and its surroundings.
