Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly chosen former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The decision followed weeks of negotiations within the opposition coalition and is seen as an effort to strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

The Atiku-Amaechi ticket is expected to provide a North-East and South-South regional balance. Political observers say the move is also a response to the rival alliance of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Amaechi had previously denied seeking the vice-presidential position. After purchasing and submitting his presidential nomination form, he stated that he was not interested in becoming a running mate.

However, sources close to the former Rivers State governor said he eventually accepted the offer after consultations with influential political leaders from the North-West and South-South regions. According to the sources, Atiku assured him that he would play a major role in both the election campaign and a future government if they win.

Meanwhile, ADC chieftain Eze Chukwuemeka Eze dismissed claims by party member Dele Momodu that Amaechi had rejected the vice-presidential slot. Eze described the comments as a personal opinion that could create unnecessary tension within the party.

In a separate Democracy Day statement marking June 12, Atiku criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying its actions were contrary to the ideals and sacrifices associated with Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

He called on Nigerians to resist bad governance, political intimidation and any actions that threaten democracy. According to him, citizens must show the same courage demonstrated by those who fought for democratic rule.

Atiku also alleged that opposition parties have faced increasing pressure over the past three years through political intimidation, orchestrated defections and the misuse of state institutions.

He claimed that agencies such as anti-corruption bodies, the police, the National Assembly and parts of the judiciary have been used to weaken opposition voices and encourage defections to the ruling party.

The former vice president urged Nigerians to remain committed to protecting democracy and holding leaders accountable.
