Why I Left APC — Iyabo Obasanjo Opens Up on Resignation

Former Ogun Central Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent marginalisation, exclusion and unfair treatment by the party leadership in Ogun State.

Obasanjo announced her decision in a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Yemi Sanusi. The former lawmaker, who recently sought the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election, expressed dissatisfaction with the process that led to the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s preferred governorship candidate.

According to her, while she had agreed to support any candidate who emerged through a consensus arrangement, she was neither consulted nor involved before Adeola was eventually announced as the candidate. She argued that the process did not fully align with the APC’s established guidelines for selecting candidates.

Obasanjo also alleged that some of her supporters were denied access to the venue where Adeola was unveiled and were subjected to intimidation during the exercise. Despite these concerns, she said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Adeola on the same day he emerged as the candidate.

The former senator further revealed that Adeola later requested a meeting with her supporters, during which they presented three demands. Although he reportedly promised to respond within a week, she said no feedback had been received more than two months later.

She noted that the development reinforced what she viewed as a recurring pattern of disregard and lack of appreciation for her role and contributions within the party. According to her, the continued neglect ultimately influenced her decision to resign from the APC.

Despite leaving the party, Obasanjo expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC leadership and other stakeholders for the support and courtesies extended to her during her membership.

Obasanjo returned to partisan politics earlier this year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, signaling her political comeback ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
