Safety in Abuja Doesn’t Shield Us from Insecurity – Senator Demands Suspension of Political Activities

The Senator representing Bauchi Central, Abdul Ningi has called for the suspension of political activities in eight states affected by insecurity, stressing that “we cannot continue to think because we are in Abuja and therefore this does not affect us. It has affected us.”

This calls to mind the disclosure by Senate President Godswill Akpabio last week when he claimed that the violence ravaging parts of the country is temporary and politically motivated. He stressed that the orgy of killings will come to an end two weeks after the 2027 general election.

Speaking during Wednesday’s plenary, Ningi said political activities should be halted in Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, and parts of Kano state.

“One of the things that we must do, and I want us to take this thing very, very seriously… is either to suspend all political activities across this country, or look at the front-line states of Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, and part of Kano and suspend all political activities until we are sufficiently certain of these security issues we are dealing with.

“We are not dealing with these security issues at all, and I’m not blaming anybody,” he said, while mourning the deaths of top military officers recently killed by terrorists.

“I think we are not doing enough, and we must do sufficiently enough to tell Nigeria we are the senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Bauchi Central Senator said.

In March, no fewer than 30 people were killed when gunmen attacked Angwan Rukuba in Jos north LGA of Plateau state.

Three soldiers of the Nigerian Army were killed on Monday in a firefight with suspected terrorists who attacked a military base in the Kemanji community of Kaiama LGA of Kwara state.

The Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazak confirmed the incident on Monday evening in a statement and commiserating with families of the victims.
