The Lagos Sta Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has restated that all employers of labour operating within the state must file their annual tax returns for the 2025 financial year on or before January 31, 2026.

In a recent statement, the Executive Chairman of the Service, Dr Ayodele Subair, explained that the requirement is a statutory obligation under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025. He noted that the law makes it compulsory for employers to submit annual returns detailing payments made during the year under review.
Employers are expected to provide comprehensive information on emoluments and other forms of compensation paid to employees, including salaries, allowances, bonuses, and benefits. The filing must also cover payments made to service providers, vendors, and consultants, along with confirmation that all relevant taxes for the 2025 year have been fully deducted and remitted.

Dr Subair emphasised that the submission of annual returns is not optional, warning that any employer who fails to comply will face sanctions as prescribed by law. Such penalties may include administrative fines and other enforcement measures provided under the current tax framework.
Referring to Section 14 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, he explained that employers are legally required to file detailed annual records of employee emoluments and the associated taxes deducted and paid to the appropriate tax authorities. The law clearly states that these returns must be submitted no later than January 31 each year.

The LIRS chairman urged employers to prioritise tax compliance as an essential part of their business operations. He advised organisations to file early and ensure the accuracy of all submissions in order to avoid penalties and support effective tax administration in Lagos State.
