Rivere State : Fubara defects to APC

Femi Fabunmi

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made the announcement during a meeting with stakeholders at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Fubara now joins several other governors who have moved to the APC this year.

Talks about his possible defection became widespread in the last day, especially as political tensions have increased in Rivers State.

Recently, 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who support former Governor Nyesom Wike and are led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, also left the PDP for the APC.

Their move changed the power structure in the Assembly.

Fubara

APC leaders have been openly urging Fubara to join their party, promising him support, leadership opportunities, and the chance to strengthen the party in Rivers State before the 2027 elections.

However, PDP leaders strongly oppose his decision. They say leaving the party would harm his political career.

They also reminded Fubara that he became governor with the PDP’s support.
Timothy Osadolor, a member of PDP’s National Executive Committee, warned that the APC is only trying to benefit from the PDP’s hard work.

He said defecting might end Fubara’s political journey and suggested that the constitution should stop the president from suspending governors without National Assembly approval.

The PDP has accused the APC and President Bola Tinubu of trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

The party urged Nigerians, civil groups, democratic institutions, and international partners to defend democracy, fair elections, and citizens’ rights.
