“Igbo Pride: Okonjo-Iweala’s Second Term as WTO DG Lauded by Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), expressing confidence in her ability to continue delivering her duties with unparalleled prudence and diligence.

Okey Emuchay, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, conveyed the organization’s pride in Okonjo-Iweala’s achievements, describing her as a beacon of hope and excellence among Nigerians. In a statement issued by Alex Ogbonnia, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Emuchay lauded Okonjo-Iweala as a virtuous and quintessential Igbo woman, admired globally for her character, ingenuity, elegance, and integrity.

Emuchay emphasized that Okonjo-Iweala has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to integrity, transparency, and good governance. He highlighted her strong stance against corruption, recalling her efforts to initiate institutional reforms in Nigeria aimed at curbing graft and enhancing transparency. During her tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, she introduced innovative bureaucratic mechanisms to foster accountability in public offices.

Her leadership as Finance Minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo was particularly noteworthy, as she spearheaded historic negotiations with the Paris Club that resulted in the cancellation of $18 billion of Nigeria’s debt. This achievement remains a landmark in Nigeria’s economic history.

Ohanaeze further celebrated Okonjo-Iweala’s international acclaim, noting that she has been recognized as one of the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women in the World for seven consecutive years. This recognition underscores her influence as a global thought leader and her commitment to excellence in public service.

The organization described her re-election to the WTO as a testament to her unblemished record and stellar performance during her first term.
