Nigerian rapper and actor Folarin Falana better known as Falz has revealed that he was once a lawyer by day and rapper by night. The rapper made this known while describing how he led a double life when he was practicing law.

In an episode of the Madam Joyce podcast, Falz disclosed that there was a legal rule prohibiting lawyers from being involved in other activities while practicing law. Speaking on the challenges, the rapper noted that it was not easy balancing his two careers.

He said:

“There was a time I was in court, and living a double life at the time as well. Lawyer by day, rapper by night.

“So when I announced my appearance ‘With profound respect my lord, the name is Folarin the Falana, appearing for the plaintiff’ and the judge lowered his glasses and said ‘counsel, are you not the one doing something else on the side?’

“There is an unspoken rule of professional conduct within the legal practice where you are not supposed to do other things.”

Falz started his career while in secondary school after forming a group called ‘The School Boys’ with his friend.

His professional career as a music artist kick started in 2009. He became well known after releasing the song ‘Marry Me’ featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade

Falz released a single titled ‘Wahz Up Guy’, then released ‘High Class’ and ‘Currency’ in 2011 which made him gain more grounds in the Nigerian music industry.

The rapper was nominated in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for his single ‘Marry Me’.

Falz won “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for his role as Quam in the movie ‘New Money’, becoming the first Nigerian musician to have won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards two times.

He currently owns an independent record label called Bahd Guys Records. Falz had previously worked with colleague Simi on hit singles ‘Jamb Question’ and ‘Soldier’.
