Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that sharing food items like rice and spaghetti will not help President Bola Ahmed Tinubu win the 2027 election.
In a statement released in Abuja through his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of weakening Nigeria’s democracy. He said the government is deliberately trying to hold too much power.
According to him, even though many state governors have joined the ruling party, the government still appears afraid of real political competition and the will of the people.
Atiku said giving out food may help people temporarily, but it cannot replace public trust or guarantee victory in an election. He warned that such actions cannot secure real support from voters.
He also claimed that opposition parties are being weakened by internal crises and questionable court decisions, which create confusion instead of clarity.
He raised concerns about the electoral system, saying some decisions are making people doubt its fairness. He added that there are also worrying cases of opposition figures being targeted or detained, which could be an abuse of power.
Atiku said many political leaders across different parties are facing a difficult environment, which is not healthy for democracy.
He warned that if things continue this way, Nigeria could move toward a system where elections exist but real competition is limited, leading to a one-party state.
He urged Nigerians to pay attention to what is happening and defend democracy, stressing that leadership should be decided by the people, not by pressure or manipulation.
