Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will challenge the life imprisonment sentence recently delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

This was confirmed by his former legal representative and consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, who spoke to journalists shortly after the judgment.

According to the court ruling, Kanu was found guilty on several terrorism-related charges.

Justice Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five, and six, which are considered the most serious offences. On count three, he received 20 years in prison, and on count seven, five years. Both of these additional sentences carry no option of a fine, meaning they must be served fully if upheld.

Ejimakor explained that the legal team strongly disagrees with the decision and believes there are solid grounds to challenge it at the Court of Appeal. He stressed that the case is far from over and that Kanu intends to exhaust all legal avenues available to him.

“We are heading to appeal,” he said confidently, adding that they will begin the process immediately. He also noted that supporters should remain calm as the legal battle continues.

The judgment has already generated significant public interest because of Kanu’s long-running confrontation with the Nigerian government, his arrest abroad, and the long legal journey that followed.

Many observers see the upcoming appeal as another major phase in a case that has shaped national debate on security, separatism, and justice.
