D’Tigress Rally Past Philippines 101–84 in 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifier
Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, produced a strong second-half performance to defeat the Philippines women’s national basketball team 101–84 in their third match of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament on Saturday.

The African champions entered the game looking to bounce back after a disappointing 77–60 loss to the Colombia women’s national basketball team earlier in the tournament.

However, the encounter began on a challenging note for the Nigerian side, as the Philippines started brightly and applied early pressure.
The Asian side took control of the opening quarter, edging it 25–21 with quick ball movement and efficient scoring.

They maintained their momentum in the second quarter, stretching their advantage and heading into halftime with a comfortable 51–42 lead. Nigeria struggled to contain their opponents defensively during the first half, while also missing several scoring opportunities.

The momentum shifted dramatically after the break. Inspired by improved defensive intensity and sharper offensive play, D’Tigress mounted a determined comeback in the third quarter.

The Nigerian team dominated the period, outscoring the Philippines 34–21 to overturn the halftime deficit and regain control of the game.

Under the guidance of head coach Rena Wakama, the team continued to build on their momentum in the final quarter. Nigeria’s players displayed confidence and composure, tightening their defense while executing well-coordinated attacks.

Their dominance was evident as they outscored the Philippines 25–12 in the fourth quarter, eventually breaking the 100-point mark and sealing an emphatic 101–84 victory.

The win marks an important response for D’Tigress in the qualifying tournament as they aim to secure a place at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next challenge, a crucial clash against the France women’s national basketball team on Sunday.

The team will then conclude their qualifying campaign with a final match against the Germany women’s national basketball team on Monday.

Both fixtures are expected to be decisive as the African champions push to strengthen their chances of advancing in the competition.
