The Federal Government of Nigeria has started evacuating Nigerians who wish to leave Iran due to the growing tensions in the Middle East.

The evacuation is being carried out to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens living in the country as the situation in the region continues to raise concerns.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed the development through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

She explained that Nigerians who are willing to leave Iran are currently being escorted safely to the border of Armenia by officials from the Nigerian Embassy.

According to the commission, embassy staff in Tehran are working closely with local authorities to make sure the evacuation process goes smoothly.

Officials are guiding Nigerians across the Armenia border where arrangements have been made to receive and assist them after they exit Iran.

NiDCOM stated that the evacuation demonstrates the Nigerian government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, especially during times of crisis or uncertainty.

The commission also noted that the government acted quickly to coordinate with Armenian authorities in order to provide safe routes for Nigerians leaving the country.

Dabiri-Erewa reassured the public that, so far, no Nigerian living in Iran has been affected by the ongoing tensions. She added that government officials remain stationed at the border to welcome evacuees and provide any necessary assistance.

The Nigerian government also emphasized that it remains vigilant about the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in different parts of the world.

Authorities say they will continue to monitor the situation closely and take further action if necessary to protect Nigerian citizens abroad.
