Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after the club finished fifth in the Premier League during his second season in charge.
The Dutch manager leaves Anfield just one year after leading Liverpool to their 20th English league title.
However, a poor title defence and concerns about the team’s style of play convinced the club that a change was needed.
In a statement, Liverpool thanked Slot for his contribution, describing his time at the club as successful and praising his leadership, work ethic and professionalism.
The club said it was a difficult decision but believed a new direction was necessary to help the team move forward.
Liverpool also acknowledged Slot’s achievement in winning the Premier League title in his first season and said he would always be remembered for that success.
Liverpool secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League despite finishing fifth.
However, the team managed only 60 points, their lowest Premier League total since the 2015/16 season.
Iraola Emerges as Favourite
Former Andoni Iraola manager Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to replace Slot.
Liverpool are expected to begin formal talks with the Spanish coach, who recently left AFC Bournemouth after guiding the club to a sixth-place finish and qualification for the Europa League.
Iraola reportedly has a strong relationship with Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, who played a key role in bringing him to Bournemouth in 2023.
Why Liverpool Want Iraola
According to Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor, Liverpool’s decision was largely based on footballing reasons rather than results alone.
The club believes a different style of play is needed, one that is closer to the high-energy football associated with former manager Jürgen Klopp.
O’Connor said Iraola’s attacking approach and personality would likely appeal to Liverpool supporters.
He added that while moving from Bournemouth to Liverpool would be a major step up, many people have been impressed by the work he has done and the football his teams play.
Liverpool are expected to conduct a thorough search before making a final decision, but Iraola is currently considered the frontrunner for the job.
