Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Muslim cleric celebrated for his courage in protecting Christians during deadly violence in 2018, has died at the age of 90. Until his passing, he served as the Chief Imam of Nghar Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. His death is being mourned widely as a monumental loss to both his community and the nation.
The late Imam rose to national and international prominence in June 2018, when armed attackers swept through Barkin Ladi, killing scores and forcing hundreds of residents to flee. Amid the chaos, Imam Abubakar opened the doors of his mosque and his home to those seeking refuge, providing sanctuary to more than 260 Christians and ensuring their safety despite the risk to his own life.
His actions reflected a lifelong commitment to compassion, humanity, and peaceful coexistence. Imam Abubakar’s bravery and dedication to protecting the vulnerable earned him recognition both at home and abroad, and he became a symbol of unity and interfaith solidarity.
