Kano State is witnessing a political standoff following Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo’s refusal to resign after Governor Abba Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.
While the governor switched political allegiance, Gwarzo has chosen to remain loyal to the NNPP and its national leader, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso. His decision has sparked calls from some APC loyalists for him to step down, arguing that his continued presence in government may undermine political alignment.
However, the NNPP has thrown its weight behind the deputy governor, affirming his right to occupy the office and emphasizing his pivotal role in the state’s governance. Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, NNPP spokesman in Kano, described Gwarzo as a “bona fide member of the party and a key figure in the state government.
” He added that the Deputy Governor was elected on a joint ticket with Governor Yusuf and is constitutionally entitled to continue his duties.
In contrast, the state’s Information and Internal Affairs Commissioner, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, suggested that it would be “honourable” for Gwarzo to resign if he no longer shares the governor’s political path.
Waiya warned that governance requires trust, and personal ambitions should not conflict with the direction of government.
Reports indicate that the government, which enjoys a two-thirds majority in the Kano State House of Assembly, may attempt to impeach the deputy governor if he continues to resist resignation.
However, finding grounds for “gross misconduct” against him could prove challenging.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso’s son, Mustapha, who held the Youth and Sports Development portfolio, has already left the administration following the governor’s defection.
The situation in Kano remains tense as political stakeholders monitor whether Gwarzo will step aside or face potential legislative action.
