Nigeria has again been elected to lead the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, also known as C-34. This is the 54th time Nigeria will chair the important UN committee.

The election took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the opening of the 2026 session. Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires at the UN, Syndoph Endoni, was chosen as Chair by agreement of all member states.

Nigeria has led the peacekeeping committee many times since 1972. Its continued election shows the strong trust other countries have in Nigeria’s role in global peace efforts. The country is one of the largest contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions. Nigeria ranks 15th in the world and eighth in Africa in providing troops for these operations.

Speaking during the general debate of the 2026 session, Endoni said peace, unity and dialogue are key parts of Nigeria’s national identity and foreign policy. He explained that Nigeria remains committed to solving conflicts peacefully and will continue to support peacekeeping efforts in Africa and other parts of the world.

He also said Nigeria understands the growing importance of technology and innovation in modern peacekeeping. According to him, using data, better communication tools and responsible technology can improve the safety of peacekeepers and help them carry out their duties effectively.

Endoni further stressed the need for discipline, accountability and proper procedures in peacekeeping missions. He said Nigeria is ready to support the work of the committee and work closely with other countries to promote global peace and security.

The Nigerian envoy added that the re-election strengthens Nigeria’s leadership role at the United Nations and highlights its strong commitment to maintaining international peace and security.
