Voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to head to the polls to elect chairmen and councillors across the six area councils, in what many observers describe as a crucial grassroots political test ahead of 2027.

The councils involved in the election are Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali.

The contest is drawing national attention, particularly as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) seeks to measure its growing influence in Abuja.

The party, backed by a coalition of prominent opposition figures including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, has intensified campaigns in recent weeks, urging residents to vote for what it calls accountable and people-focused leadership.

In AMAC, the ADC chairmanship candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, says he is fully prepared to assume office if given the mandate.

According to him, leadership is a long-term commitment built on years of engagement with the people rather than a last-minute ambition. He described the election as an opportunity for residents to demand competence, dignity and transparent governance.

Dr. Paul also stressed that collaboration with relevant authorities, including the FCT Minister, would be essential for progress.

However, he maintained that his primary loyalty would remain with the people of AMAC. Addressing concerns about indigene status, he noted that service and commitment to community development should matter more than place of origin.

Across markets and neighbourhoods in Bwari, Dutse and other communities, residents shared mixed reactions.

Many expressed frustration with unfulfilled campaign promises in the past, while others said they were focused on practical issues such as roads, water supply and security.

Some voters indicated they had already decided whom to support, waiting only for election day.

Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command has announced a 12-hour restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to ensure peaceful conduct of the polls.

Political dynamics have further intensified following comments by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who declared his support for candidates aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision, regardless of party affiliation.

Though a member of the PDP, Wike has openly campaigned for APC candidates, a move that has led to some PDP aspirants stepping down in favour of their APC counterparts in certain councils.

With shifting alliances and heightened voter expectations, the outcome of the FCT council elections is expected to shape the political landscape in Abuja in the months ahead.
