The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, in a move that appears to signal a pause in the prolonged political crisis in the state.

The lawmakers took the decision on Thursday during their resumed plenary in Port Harcourt. During the sitting, a motion was presented on the floor of the House seeking to halt the impeachment process.

After deliberations, the Assembly adopted the motion, effectively stopping further action against the governor and his deputy.

The suspension of the proceedings is believed to be connected to the recent intervention by Bola Tinubu.

The President had earlier convened a meeting involving Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and key members of the Rivers Assembly.

The meeting was aimed at finding a political solution to the standoff that had sharply divided the state’s political leadership.

In recent months, the impeachment threat had heightened tension across Rivers State, drawing reactions from political stakeholders and residents alike.

Supporters of both sides openly expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding governance, while many citizens worried that the crisis could slow down development projects and affect public services.

With the impeachment process now on hold, attention is expected to shift toward dialogue and reconciliation among the major actors involved.

Observers say the suspension provides an opportunity for all parties to prioritize stability and governance over political rivalry.

Many residents are hopeful that this latest development will mark the beginning of lasting peace and renewed cooperation within the state’s political structure.
