FG Urges Unions to Halt Nationwide Strike Amid Escalating Tensions

In a late-night development, the Federal Government has issued a plea to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to refrain from their proposed nationwide strike.

The call comes as both unions escalated their standoff with the Imo State government, prompting concerns from the Federal Government.

On Monday, the NLC and TUC had rallied workers nationwide, urging them to down tools at midnight, amplifying their grievances against the Imo State government.

Nationwide Strike Looms as NLC, TUC Protest Assault on Labour Leaders

The labour unrest gained momentum following an assault on NLC National President Joe Ajaero during a demonstration in Imo State, where he protested against the prolonged non-payment of salaries and pensions, along with alleged violation of labour rights.

In response to the brewing crisis, Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Assistant Communication & Publicity to the AGF & Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, released a statement reminding the unions of a court order that prohibits them from proceeding with the strike.

“We wish to remind the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress that there is a subsisting court order stopping the unions and their affiliates from embarking on the strike,” the statement read.

“The interim order was granted on November 10 by the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice B. B. Kanyip.

“The unions have been served the court order and, therefore, must surrender themselves to the authority of the court which is already seized with the facts of the case. Any action taken contrary to the order will be tantamount to contempt of court.

The Federal Government thus called on the unions to “respect the court order and adhere to the principle of the rule of law. There is no need to resort to self-help.

“We urge workers to report for duties and not to entertain any fear as their safety is guaranteed and will be protected within the ambit of law”.

The government emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and discouraged any resort to self-help.

The assault on Joe Ajaero in Imo State has intensified the labour dispute, with the NLC demanding the resignation of individuals involved in the attack, whom they claim were police officers and thugs allegedly sent by the Imo State Government.

Last week, the NLC staged a protest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as part of their efforts to draw attention to their demands.
