The Federal Government and the National Assembly have begun efforts to significantly increase the number of beneficiaries under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), with a target of reaching seven million students across the country.
The move is part of a broader plan to improve access to education and reduce financial barriers faced by many young Nigerians seeking higher learning opportunities.
Officials involved in the programme believe that expanding the scheme will provide greater support to students in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other approved institutions. The initiative is also expected to benefit individuals pursuing vocational and technical training, helping more Nigerians acquire skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship.
During a recent engagement with education stakeholders, government representatives emphasized the importance of creating awareness about the student loan programme. They noted that although many students have already benefited from the scheme, a large number of eligible applicants are still unaware of the opportunities available to them.
Lawmakers supporting the initiative stressed that access to information remains one of the biggest challenges affecting participation. According to them, increasing public awareness through nationwide sensitisation campaigns will help ensure that students from all regions of the country understand the application process and requirements for accessing the loans.
Since its establishment, NELFUND has provided financial assistance to hundreds of thousands of students, helping them cover tuition fees and other educational expenses. The programme was introduced to ease the financial burden on families and ensure that deserving students are not forced to abandon their studies because of economic difficulties.
Officials overseeing the fund disclosed that the programme has already made a significant impact on the lives of students and their families. They explained that beyond direct beneficiaries, millions of Nigerians indirectly benefit from the support provided through the scheme, as families are relieved of some of the financial pressures associated with education.
The proposed expansion is expected to strengthen the government’s efforts to improve educational access and human capital development. Stakeholders believe that increasing the number of beneficiaries will contribute to a more educated workforce, boost productivity, and support national development goals.
Education experts have also welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward addressing long-standing challenges in the education sector. They argue that access to affordable financing can help increase enrollment rates, improve academic performance, and reduce the number of students dropping out due to financial constraints.
The National Assembly has expressed readiness to continue working closely with NELFUND and other relevant agencies to ensure the programme achieves its objectives. Lawmakers pledged support for policies and initiatives that would enable more students to benefit from the scheme while ensuring transparency and accountability in its implementation.
As discussions continue, stakeholders remain optimistic that the planned expansion will create new opportunities for millions of Nigerian youths. If successfully implemented, the initiative could become one of the country’s most impactful educational support programmes, helping students pursue their academic ambitions and build better futures for themselves and their communities.
