Military Junta Forms New Government In Niger

TOPSOCIETYNG

Niger Coupists have once again defiled ECOWAS warning to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, in a new move by forming a new government.

This is less than a month after the Military Junta seized power from the democratically elected government in the West African country.

The Military led by Abdourahmane Tchiani announced the decision through a decree read out on national television.

Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine will lead the 21-member government as the Prime Minister, with generals from the new military governing council heading the defence and interior ministries, AFP news agency reported.

Mahamane Roufai Laouali, identified as the “Secretary General of the Government”, read out 21 names on television without specifying any further plans.

Meanwhile, three coup leaders have been named ministers of defence, interior and sports in the government, which is about half the size of the previous one.

The fate of the Junta is yet to be seen, as ECOWAS is set to meet in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday to deliberate how to restore democracy to the country.

Recall that Bazoum had on Wednesday, raised an alarm about how he is been kept in isolated and forced to eat dry rice.

In a series of text messages to a friend, Bazoum was quoted “deprived of all human contact” since Friday, with no one supplying him food or medicine.

He added that he had been living without electricity for a week, a normal occurrence for most Nigeriens after Nigeria cut off electric power in response to the coup.

The world await the outcome of ECOWAS on meeting on Thursday, in the wake of this new development from the Junta.
