Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)
and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions
(NASU) have ended their one-week warning strike.
The two unions began the strike to protest over their salaries withheld
by the federal government.
SSANU and NASU accused the federal government of unfair treatment and
discrimination.
Both unions expressed concern that the federal government failed to pay
them like their academic counterparts.
The unions issued a seven-day ultimatum on March 1, began a one-week
warning strike on March 11, and then a nationwide action on March 18.
The protesting staff shut down hostels, cut off power supply, and
withdrew security/administrative services in public universities.
On Sunday, Muhammed Ibrahim, president of SSANU, directed members of
both unions to resume work on Monday.
In 2022, the salaries of university staff who embarked on an eight-month
strike were withheld by the administration of former President Muhammadu
Buhari.
In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu directed the release of four
months of the withheld eight-month pay of all lecturers.
However, a joint committee of SSANU and NASU raised the alarm that the
government released four months of withheld salaries to members of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) without extending the same
gesture to other non-academic staff.
