Late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu’s death who passed away on Wednesday, has triggered a wave of resignations from key aides and exacerbating political tensions in the region.
Hours after Akeredolu’s demise, his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in as the new governor. However, this transition was marred by the resignations of five of Akeredolu’s aides, including the Chief Press Secretary, Special Adviser on Union Matters, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Special Assistant on Photography, and Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy.
Their departure, some citing loyalty to the late governor, signals a reluctance to work with the new leadership. Reports suggest the resignations may be fueled by fears of victimization under the new governor.

The political strife was evident even before Akeredolu’s death, with a lack of cooperation among cabinet members during Aiyedatiwa’s acting governorship. The state Assembly’s move to impeach Aiyedatiwa further strained relationships, leading to public apologies and rebuffs.
As Aiyedatiwa assumes the governorship, he faces the immediate task of appointing a new deputy governor. Sources indicate that he is considering loyal cabinet members, with Chief of Staff Olugbenga Ale and Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Razak Obe among the potential choices.

Amidst this political turmoil, a group, the Sunshine Advancement Ambassadors, has advised the new governor to focus on governance and avoid engaging in a witch-hunt against perceived enemies.
The situation remains fluid, with the people of Ondo State anxiously watching how the new administration will navigate these challenging circumstances.
