Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has said that the killings in Nigeria’s Southeast region are not based on religion, but rather involve Christians killing one another.
Soludo made this statement while reacting to U.S. President Donald
Trump’s warning to take military action against Islamic terrorists in Northern Nigeria after naming the country a “Country of Particular Concern.”
Speaking during a media chat over the weekend, Soludo explained that most of those behind the violence in the Southeast are Christians themselves.
He said the situation has nothing to do with religion and called for serious discussions to find lasting peace.
According to him:
“In Eastern Nigeria, the killings are not about religion. The people carrying out these attacks have Christian names like Emmanuel, Peter, and John. They have killed many of our youths, but this is not about Christians and Muslims.
In this region, 95 percent of people are Christians, so it’s Christians attacking fellow Christians.”
Soludo also said that while the U.S. has a right to express its views, Nigeria must focus on solving its internal problems through dialogue and understanding.
He added: “Nigeria will overcome these challenges, and it will all end through conversations and peace efforts.”
