Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has expressed regret over a recent interview that sparked intense backlash on social media after her remarks about her teenage daughter Similoluwa, were misinterpreted.
The actress came under fire after clips from the interview surfaced online, in which she appeared to suggest that she allowed her daughter to drink alcohol while accompanying her to a club.
The comment quickly drew criticism from parents, fans, and child rights advocates who accused her of encouraging underage drinking.
In a clarification aired later on an entertainment TV programme, Bakare said her words were taken out of context, stressing that her daughter did not consume alcohol during the club outing.
She described the incident as a “slip of the tongue,” adding that she has been deeply disturbed by the controversy.
“I have not been able to concentrate since morning because of the accusations of me introducing my teenage daughter to alcohol,” she said.
“My phone has been buzzing non-stop with calls and messages. Simi is a minor, and she doesn’t take alcohol. I took her to the club, but there was no alcohol involved.”
Bakare apologised to her daughter and to parents who felt offended by the initial statement, explaining that she never intended to send the wrong message.
“I didn’t know I said it that way during the interview it was a slip of the tongue,” she clarified. “I am sorry to Simi and to all the parents who feel I was wrong.
This is why I hesitate to grant interviews; the backlash and harsh comments have been overwhelming.”
The actress disclosed that she has struggled to cope with the volume of phone calls, personal messages, and social media reactions since the story broke.
She reiterated that she is a responsible mother who would never expose her child to alcohol or any form of social vice.
“I love my daughter and would never do anything to harm her,” she said. “People misunderstood my statement, and it hurts to see how quickly things were blown out of proportion.”
The incident has continued to dominate online conversations, with many commentators urging celebrities to exercise caution when speaking about family matters in public.
For Bakare, the episode serves as a reminder of how a simple misstatement can escalate in the digital age.
