The gang, carrying guns and machetes, beat up several female lodgers and stole their money, jewellery, and other belongings.

The six-room guest house, located in the Ambo/Mbukpa area, was overcrowded because many women had come from across Nigeria and abroad to attend the anniversary of the Universal Women’s Fellowship of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, whose headquarters is nearby.

Residents said this was not the first time the building was attacked. They claimed the place had been raided at least four times in the last two years, usually after criminals noticed visitors arriving.

Some victims said the robbers moved from room to room, threatening them before stealing their possessions.
One victim, Sister Angela from Rivers State, described the experience as frightening.

“They broke into our rooms at night. Some stood outside while others forced the doors open. One of them hit me and my sister with a gun and demanded money.

Even after I gave them cash, they searched through our bags with torchlights,” she said.

Attempts to speak with the guest house management were unsuccessful, as a man who claimed to be the manager refused to comment.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River, Igri Ewa, confirmed the incident. He said police have started investigations to catch those responsible.
