The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has weakened Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Obi said Nigeria was a country with great promise before the APC came to power.
“In 1999, we ended military rule and returned to democracy.
That was the beginning of a new journey toward prosperity, freedom, and justice. Over time, we built Africa’s largest economy and strong democratic institutions.
But in the last ten years, under APC’s poor, corrupt, and divisive leadership, Nigeria has been greatly diminished,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that at independence in 1960, Nigeria was expected to grow into not just Africa’s giant, but also a global power.
He criticized the current government’s policies, saying that more than 15 million people fell below the poverty line in its first year.
Despite this, he said, the government continues to impose heavy taxes on citizens, while giving them little or nothing in return.
