China has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that it is helping to fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, Trump accused China and India of being the “main funders” of the conflict because they continue to buy Russian oil despite his warnings.

China’s Foreign Ministry responded by saying that its trade with Russia is based on fairness and international rules.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun argued that the U.S. and European countries also trade with Russia, so it is unfair for Washington to criticize China.

“China will do what is necessary to protect its legitimate rights and interests,” Jiakun said.

He added that Chinese-Russian business ties follow market principles and World Trade Organization rules.

China also used the opportunity to call for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Over 150 UN member states currently support the move. Jiakun said the growing support reflects “global opinion” and insisted that a two-state solution is the only path to peace.

While the U.S., Israel, and their allies continue to oppose Palestinian statehood, China pledged to work with the international community to help Palestinians achieve independence.
