Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been dealt a big setback ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup after defender Marvelous Freedom was ruled out of the tournament.

Freedom, who plays for Ikorodu City, injured his knee during training earlier this week. Medical checks confirmed that he will not recover quickly enough to play in the competition, which kicks off next week in Chile.

The news comes as a disappointment because the young centre-back had been expected to play an important role in the team’s defence.

In response, head coach Aliyu Zubairu has called up Haruna Aliyu of Wikki Tourists as a replacement.

Aliyu had been part of the squad but was dropped shortly before the team travelled for their final preparations. Now, he has been given a second chance and is expected to fly out to Chile on Friday morning to join his teammates.

Despite the setback, the Flying Eagles remain focused on their mission.

The team will begin their campaign against Norway on Monday. Other teams in Nigeria’s group are Colombia and Saudi Arabia.

The group is expected to be tough, but Coach Zubairu has expressed confidence that his players can rise to the challenge.

The Flying Eagles have a proud history in youth football and have previously reached the final of the U-20 World Cup on more than one occasion.

Supporters are hopeful that the current squad can go far in the competition, even though losing Freedom is a blow to their defensive strength.

With the addition of Haruna Aliyu, the players will now continue their preparations in Chile, aiming to make a strong start and keep Nigeria’s dream of winning the U-20 World Cup alive.
