The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) branch, has publicly praised Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer at the university, for his patience and calmness after being assaulted by a female student.
Dr. Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, was walking through a hallway when he unknowingly disrupted a TikTok video being recorded by a student. The student, identified as Goddy-Mbakwe Chiamaka Precious from the Department of History and International Studies, reacted aggressively by attacking and biting him. In a letter signed by the ASUU UNIZIK Chairman, Kingsley Ubaoji, and Secretary, Joseph Onyejiaka, the union expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Okoye’s level-headedness and professionalism in handling the situation. They stated that his ability to stay calm under such provocation was a sign of strong character and self-discipline. ASUU emphasized that his mature response not only upheld his personal integrity but also reflected positively on the university as a whole.
The union also acknowledged the swift intervention of the Acting Vice Chancellor, whose prompt action reassured the university staff that their safety and well-being were a priority. ASUU stressed the importance of maintaining a secure and respectful learning environment where both students and lecturers can coexist peacefully.
Furthermore, ASUU reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its members while advocating for a conducive academic atmosphere. The union assured Dr. Okoye of its unwavering support and solidarity, urging all university staff to continue demonstrating professionalism and patience in challenging situations.
