Nigeria’s U-19 women’s basketball team, Junior D’Tigress, has been placed in Group B of the 2025 U-19 World Cup. They will play against Portugal, Canada, and China in the tournament, which will take place in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 12 to 20.
The draw for the competition was conducted yesterday by former Czech basketball stars, Ivana Becerova and Eva Viteckova. Nigeria was in Pot 4 alongside Hungary, Argentina, and Brazil.
The tournament has four groups:
Group A: USA, Israel, Hungary, Korea
Group B: Nigeria, Portugal, Canada, China
Group C: Australia, France, Brazil, Mali
Group D: Japan, Czech Republic, Argentina, Spain
Nigeria earned its place in the competition by finishing second behind Mali at the U-18 Women’s AfroBasket last year. Although Nigeria had previously qualified for the 2010 U-19 World Cup in Chile, the team did not participate.
Match Schedule for Nigeria in Group B:
July 12: Nigeria vs. China, Portugal vs. Canada
July 13: Nigeria vs. Canada, China vs. Portugal
July 14: Rest day
July 15: Nigeria vs. Portugal
If Nigeria finishes among the top two teams in the group, they will advance to the round of 16 on July 16.
July 17: Rest day
July 18: Quarterfinals and first classification matches
July 19: Semifinals and more classification games
July 20: Final matches, including the championship and third-place games
FIBA has yet to confirm which of the two competition halls at Starez Arena Vodova will host the group and round of 16 games. The full game schedule will be announced later.
