The rainy season is at its peak, unveiling a flooding crisis and endangering the lives of commuters and residents, especially in the nation’s commercial capital, Lagos State.
Over the past few days/weeks, flooding caused by the heavy downpour has submerged several cars and houses across the state, including in places such as Iyana-Oworo, Olopo Meji areas leading to the 3rd Mainland Bridge, Alaba International Market area, Ajangbadi and Etegbi.
The flood has also left workers trying to commute to work stranded at different bus stops; residents, including small and medium business owners, are not left out, as they are in a dire situation, with heavy debts after the flood destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

The experiences of the annual flooding crisis in Lagos and its consequences are far-reaching; however, there are proactive steps people can take during the rainy season to ensure their safety.
But before we delve into that, let’s explore effective ways by which we can prepare and stay safe for the season.
1, Get your rain gear, durable raincoats, funky umbrellas, and maybe some stylish rain hoods for the ladies, rain boots or trendy rubber shoes for the men to save the day when the streets are full of puddles! The rain can come unawares, so it is essential to carry these gears to avoid getting soaked from a sudden downpour.
2, It’s the rainy season, and to be safe from a soggy surprise outdoors or even indoors, you must do certain things such as giving your place a quick check-up: mend the leaky spots in your roof or windows, clear out clogged drainages and ensure that they are free-flowing.
3. Don’t drive during a heavy downpour, but if you must go out, it is essential to know what the water level of your destination says. You know what they say—water finds its level, and rainwater is no exception. While there may be the urge to get to your destination on time, you must drive with utmost caution and take familiar roads. This helps avoid problems associated with driving on unfamiliar routes, especially in this season!

It is also important to give your tyres a quick once-over and check your wipers, battery and the entire car’s electrical system before driving on any familiar route during the rainy season.
4. Engaging in responsible behaviour is another way to ensure your safety during the rainy season. This includes helping in communal clearings within your street. If you deem it safe, pick up pedestrians walking inside the rain, if they’re headed in your direction.
And lastly, let’s talk about health. With rain comes a new set of health concerns—cough and flu, cold, sniffles, malaria and other waterborne diseases. Heavy and prolonged rainfall usher in puddles which become perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. So, it is time to unbox your mosquito nets, coils, insecticides, and mosquito-repellant creams to keep malaria at bay. Regular hand washing with soap is also necessary to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria.
