Commercial banks and financial institutions across Nigeria are set to close their branches on Monday, December 25th, and Tuesday, December 26th, 2023, in observance of the Christmas and Boxing Day public holidays and would reportedly resume on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
The closure aligns with the federal government’s announcement of the public holiday, impacting banking services during the festive season.
The holiday period, marking the celebration of Christmas and Boxing Day, holds great significance for Nigerians nationwide. December 25th, symbolizes Christmas Day, a festive occasion observed by millions of Christians in Nigeria and across the globe. The day is marked by joyous celebrations, gift exchanges, shared meals, and the creation of enduring memories with loved ones.
Following closely on Tuesday, December 26th, is Boxing Day, celebrated in various countries, including Nigeria, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This day emphasizes giving back, expressing gratitude to the service industry, and engaging in activities such as sports, shopping, and charitable endeavors.
However, the two-day closure of banks may pose challenges for Nigerians seeking cash during the holiday season. To mitigate inconveniences, banks have directed customers to leverage alternative electronic banking channels for their transactions. These channels include online Internet banking, mobile banking, USSD, and Automated Teller Machines (ATM).
In light of the upcoming closure, Wema Bank has issued a statement advising its customers to utilize electronic banking services during the specified period. The statement reads:
“Dear Customer: This is to notify you that our branches will be closed for the Christmas holidays on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th December, 2023, and will resume regular operations on Wednesday 27th December, 2023. We encourage you to take advantage of our alternative banking channels for your financial needs during this period.”
Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has also officially informed their customers of their early closure today which is from 2:00pm as against the usual 4:00pm. This is in regards the upcoming public holiday.
