The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his 2023 Yuletide season transport discount, acknowledging his commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu, Mr. Pedro Obi, the President of NANS, commended Tinubu’s proactive steps in announcing plans, through the Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the Presidential Intervention on Public Transportation, Dele Alake, to subsidize all luxury buses, facilitating ease of travel for citizens during the festive holidays.

Obi emphasized that Tinubu’s decision showcased a dedication to alleviating the burdens faced by travelers and highlighted the importance of supporting the educational pursuits of Nigerian students. He expressed optimism that extending the transport discount to students would significantly ease their financial challenges, enabling them to travel to their homes without undue constraints.

He said,

“This discount undoubtedly eases the financial strain on many Nigerians, making it more feasible for them to reunite with loved ones and partake in the festivities.

“However, while appreciating this thoughtful gesture, NANS, in its advocacy for students’ welfare, encourages President Tinubu to consider extending this generosity further to students across the nation.

“Recognising the financial challenges faced by students, especially during the holiday season, NANS urges President Tinubu to further alleviate the burden by offering free transport for students who can be identified with their student identity cards.”

Dele Alake, also the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, disclosed that Tinubu had approved a 50 per cent cut in land transportation fares from December 21 to January 4, 2024, covering Christmas and New Year celebrations nationwide. Alake further revealed that zero fares for train transportation would be implemented across all states during the same period, emphasizing that the initiative aimed to provide relief to the masses.

Speaking at a briefing in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Alake assured that all logistics for the implementation had been coordinated between the Minister of Transportation, transport unions, and luxury bus owners.
