TUC Urges Immediate ₦35,000 Wage Implementation

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) held an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, urging the government to promptly disburse the ₦35,000 wage award to all federal civil servants.

The call for immediate payment comes as a measure to alleviate the financial strain on workers in the aftermath of the subsidy removal.

During a press briefing in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo disclosed that, despite an agreement reached during a prior meeting, only a one-month payment for September had been disbursed to workers. Osifo expressed concern that only a limited number of employees had received a second payment, exacerbating the financial challenges faced by the workforce.

Osifo emphasized the urgency of fulfilling the agreed-upon wage award, highlighting the importance of timely disbursement to ensure the well-being of federal civil servants.

The delay in payments has sparked apprehension among workers, prompting the TUC to advocate for the immediate implementation of the ₦35,000 wage increase.

In addition to addressing the issue of wage disbursement, Osifo called upon the 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to “tighten their belt in assuaging the plight of workers.”

The removal of the fuel subsidy has intensified economic pressures, and the TUC President stressed the need for proactive measures by regional authorities to prevent a potential crisis.
