Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, is set to commence his medical leave on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, marking a temporary departure from his official responsibilities for health-related reasons.
Governor Akeredolu, in light of his commitment to prioritizing personal well-being, will utilize this medical leave to undergo necessary treatment and ensure a complete recovery before resuming his elected duties as the Governor of Ondo State.
A formal letter outlining the details of the medical leave was released by Richard Olatunde, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, and is dated December 12, 2023.
The statement also noted that the Governor is officially transferring executive powers in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution which will be promptly conveyed to the State House of Assembly.
It was disclosed that during the period of Governor Akeredolu’s absence, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will step into the role of acting Governor, assuming the responsibilities integral to the governance of the state.

Previously, there were indications that President Bola Tinubu had in a crucial meeting on Monday instructed the unwell governor to delegate authority to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. This is aimed at addressing the leadership crisis in Ondo State triggered by Akeredolu’s absence from office since July 2023.

Akeredolu Commences Medical Leave
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, will commence his medical leave on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, as a follow-up to his medical treatment.
During his medical leave, Governor Akeredolu will prioritise his health and ensure a full recovery before resuming his official duties.
A formal letter regarding the medical leave and a notice formally transferring power in line with the Nigerian Constitution will be transmitted to the House of Assembly.
In the absence of Governor Akeredolu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, will assume the responsibilities of the Governor in acting capacity.
Governor Akeredolu expresses his gratitude for the unwavering support and affection of the people of Ondo State. He assures them that his administration remains committed to the path of progress and prosperity for the people.
As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a widely respected Nigerian, Governor Akeredolu has consistently delegated power to his deputy during his annual vacations. This practice was observed on April 1, 2021, April 1, 2022, April 3, 2023, and July 10, 2023, when he embarked on previous vacations.
